August 3 – 8, 2009

The 125th U.S. National Target Championships took place in Hamilton, Ohio – August 3 – 8, 2009. The competition started a day late because of an all day thunderstorm that hit Hamilton, OH. Because of the weather, the first FITA scores were cut short of the long distances. Mother nature shined upon the archers with almost perfect weather for the rest of the U.S. Nationals and only a tid bit of wind during the U.S Open on Saturday.

Hoyt’s Jesse Broadwater added to his collection of National wins by winning both the U.S. Nationals shooting a 1409 FITA and then winning the U.S. Open shooting 114, 115, 115, and a 116 in the Gold Medal Match. Team Hoyt’s Braden Gellenthien finished second only to Broadwater in both the U.S. Nationals and the U.S. Open. Hoyt’s Ben Cleland finished 4th at the U.S. Nationals and Dave Cousins rounded out the top 5 at the U.S. Nationals. Cousins went onto round out the podium making it an all Hoyt U.S. Open, shooting a 113 in the Bronze medal match.

In the women’s compound division all top five positions were taken by Team Hoyt. Jamie Van Natta led the way shooting a 1393 FITA. Close behind, finishing in 2nd place, was Kendal Nicely with a 1391 FITA and Erika Anschutz shooting a 1390 FITA followed by Diane Johnston and Diane Watson respectively. In the U.S. Open, once again, Team Hoyt swept the podium. Jamie Van Natta shooting a 112 to win the Gold Medal over Erika Anschutz 110 and Kendal Nicely winning the Bronze medal with a score of 110 over Kieborz 108.

In other news, Hoyt’s Jamie Van Natta and Dave Cousins were awarded the Easton Award. The Easton Award, established in 1997 and named in honor of former FITA President James Easton, awards the top male and female archers in the compound division with the highest cumulative scores in the U.S. Indoor, Field and Target Championships for that year. This is Dave Cousins 11th year in a row winning this award and the 6th consecutive time for Jamie Van Natta.

Hoyt would like to congratulate all the participants of the 125th U.S. Nationals and U.S. Open. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next National event.
